Attraction, Mixed Media Font Installation

Attraction is an energetic, multidimensional sans serif font. Iron filings interact with magnetic fields creating fascinating patterns and a sense of movement on and around each character. The underlying framework of each geometric letterform reveals itself by the patterns created by the filings. Letters combine contrasting thick and thin volumes which are accentuated by the inherent texture of the materials.

The hands-on portion of the installation was comprised of magnetic letterforms, white trays, and an iron filing shaker. Visitors were encouraged to place the trays on the letterforms and sprinkle iron filings onto those trays. As each letter took shape, lightly tapping the trays resulted in new and interesting patterns as filings shifted into new positions. Visitors enjoyed experimenting with the installation and created many letters, each with their own unique shape and texture.
